Employee Spotlight: JiYoun Seo

JiYoun Seo is a Data Analyst on the Case Specialist team and has been an asset to FRT throughout her six-and-a-half-year tenure. After obtaining a master’s degree in Actuary Science from Boston University, JiYoun joined FRT, first as an ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) Associate and then transferred to the Case Specialist team where she’s been analyzing and calculating client data for over four years.

1. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned during your tenure at FRT?

I learned that there are many benefits, including opportunities for growth by working for a smaller company. If you come into work and try your best, you can be a valuable and important member of the team. You can give direct input to be able to influence processes for more efficient and streamlined work, which can make an impact on the company in a big way. Because of this, FRT feels like a family and it’s more than just going in and doing my job. The executive team truly cares about us as people, not just employees. FRT has taught me to try my best and you will see positive outcomes both in life and professionally.

2. What are your top priorities?

My top priority is to efficiently and accurately populate the loss number for global, non-U.S. cases. Client transactions can come in many different formats, so it is important that our data is clean in order to show value to our clients. That’s my team’s main function. Additionally, when we get the payout from the claim, our team goes over the payment to make sure that it matches with what we calculated in our database and it is the amount owed to our client. It’s important to make sure our client is getting the service that we promised them and in order to do that we have to make sure our calculations are accurate.

Antitrust Cases are currently a top priority for FRT so a large part of my focus is on those cases. There are times where there are many domestic cases that settle and then there are other days where our queue includes many active global cases which have an upcoming deadline that we need to meet. I manage all the inactive, global (non-U.S.) cases for the Case Specialist team, so every day I meet with the legal team to review the necessary case documents in order to calculate client data.

3.What is your biggest accomplishment to date at FRT?

I started at FRT in 2013 and the company has made significant strides from a growth perspective which I could consider to be my biggest accomplishment. For instance, our client list when I started was less than 300 and now, we’ve acquired more than 850 clients globally. Also, when I began, the only product we offered was our domestic, settled class action recovery solutions, but now we offer non-U.S., antitrust litigation and more.

4. What are a few things that most people would not know about you?

I came to United States from Korea without my parents when I was young to attend a private boarding high school in Virginia. Virginia was very different from where I grew up. There wasn’t a lot of diversity and I faced a lot of challenges, so the experience made me stronger. My sister also came to the U.S. to attend high school and went to a female Catholic school in North Carolina. We couldn’t visit each other because we didn’t have cars so that was tough, but we both got accepted to Boston University and spent three years together there. Unfortunately, my sister went back to Korea, but she has a very successful career as an attorney at a pharmaceutical company.

5. How do you define success?

I believe success is related to happiness and enjoying oneself. Enjoying what you do and doing things that make you happy is extremely fulfilling. So, if you can achieve your desired level of happiness, you’re a successful person to me.

6. How have you and your team adapted to working from home during COVID-19?

Our team uses all the technologies at our disposal to coordinate and stay connected as much as possible, such as Zoom, RingCentral, and Teams. We have a group chat where we can communicate in the moment to address urgent issues and our weekly meetings really help. Also, we have clear communication with our manager while we’re adapting to working from home which is key. We communicate our needs to her, and she then relays that information to other departments, so everyone receives a consistent message. Of course, everyone prefers to see each other in the office, but with COVID-19 we are adapting and finding ways to be even more productive than we ever thought possible.
