Increased securities class action litigation in the first half of 2015
According to Keving LaCroix of The D&O Diary, the first half of 2015 has been a busy year for securities class action filings. With approximately 91 cases filed so far, we are on pace for the highest year since 2011. As we discussed in a recent post, non-U.S. companies and IPO companies have had an increased number of securities class actions filed against them. With 20 filings against non-U.S. companies in 11 different jurisdictions, it will be interesting to see how this prevails for the rest of 2015. The increase of suits against the life sciences sector seems to be continuing the trend set in 2014.
At the end of 2014, there was an increase in securities class actions filed against companies allegedly using stock promotion firms. In 2015, this trend is continuing with a couple suits filed against companies for this alleged wrongdoing. With roughly six cases filed last year files against companies that allegedly use this service, it will be interesting to see how this trend continues in the future.
