Securities Class Action Lawsuits: Top Settlements & Disbursements (Q1, 2025)

A $362.5 million settlement resolving a longstanding securities suit against General Electric headlined shareholder recovery activity in the first quarter of 2025.

Historically, the end of the calendar year often coincides with an increase in class action settlements and disbursements, as the parties involved seek greater financial clarity entering the new year. Consequentially, Q1 can feel quieter by comparison, as it did this year coming off an especially busy Q4. Year-over-year comparisons, however, paint a steadier picture of the past three months.

Largest Case Settlements (Q1:25)

  1. General Electric ($362.5m)
  2. Alta Mesa Resources ($126.3m)
  3. Grab Holdings ($80m)
  4. Interest Rate Swaps ($71m)
  5. Chegg ($55m)

The GE settlement is larger than all but three of the new securities cases FRT tracked in 2024, and it’s the 10th-largest U.S. class action we’ve observed since the beginning of 2020.

Interest Rate Swaps, a securities-related antitrust case, presents an interesting parallel to the massive Stock Lending settlements FRT wrote about extensively last year. Both disputes focus on claims of intermediaries suppressing market competition by preventing technical innovations that would allow for direct trading between buyers and sellers. While Stock Lending was quite complex from a filing and eligibility perspective, however, Interest Rate Swaps has a relatively straightforward submission process for claimants.

Notably, the Alta Mesa and Grab cases both involve Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs), which were the subject of numerous securities lawsuits when their usage peaked 2-3 years ago. Per Stanford Class Action Clearinghouse, there were 86 such complaints filed in U.S. federal court from 2021-23, signaling that there may be additional SPAC settlements on the horizon.

Most Active Claims Administrators by Total Settlement Funds (Q1:25)

  1. JND Legal Administration (3 cases, $518.3m)
  2. A.B. Data (3 cases, $149.7m)
  3. Epiq (2 cases, $84m)
  4. Gilardi & Co (2 cases, $58m)
  5. Kroll Settlement Administration (2 cases, $46.5m)

Largest Case Disbursements (Q1:25)

  1. Grupo Televisa ($95m)
  2. Allstate ($90m)
  3. Arconic ($74m)
  4. Mohawk Industries ($60m)
  5. Infinity Q Capital Management ($48m)

None of the cases that paid out this past quarter surpassed $100 million in settlement value. But the largest, Grupo Televisa, involved a Mexico-based defendant that was not widely held among U.S. investors and resulted in a high pro rata payout rate of nearly 22%. The case serves as another example of U.S. class actions being a significant source of recoveries for non-U.S. shareholders.

Most Active Claims Administrators by Total Disbursements (Q1:25)

  1. A.B. Data (8 cases, $294m)
  2. JND Legal Administration (3 cases, $121.5m)
  3. Gilardi & Co (4 cases, $109.5m)
  4. Kroll Settlement Administration (1 case, $95m)
  5. Strategic Claims Services (4 cases, $25.9m)
