Employee Spotlight: Alex Watler

Alex Watler is a Product Manager at Financial Recovery Technologies and is primarily responsible for FRT’s product offerings and ensuring what we deliver to our clients aligns with the expectations from the market. Before joining FRT, Alex was a Business Analyst at a financial services technology company where he gained experience in product management, software development, and the fin-tech industry.

1. What are the top priorities and biggest challenges for your role and department?

The top priority for FRT’s Product team is to ensure that we deliver solutions that align with expectations from the market. The biggest challenge in achieving that is trying to keep pace with the ever-evolving market and making corresponding changes to how we deliver our services as FRT continues to grow and expand aggressively.

2. What is your biggest achievement to date at FRT?

FRT is growing exponentially. I was hired as employee number 30 and I am very proud to be able to say that. We continue to hire more people each week and we are nearing 100 employees. In addition to our increase in capital, our solutions and services are continuously evolving to keep up with the changing landscape. It is rewarding to be part of the development team that delivered the first release of our Client Portal in 2016 as well as the many iterations and enhancements we’ve made over the years.

3. What brought you to FRT and what keeps you here?

I came to FRT because of the small, entrepreneurial start-up culture and the intellectually interesting landscape our business operates within. As we are at the crossroads of finance, law, and technology, it is a niche market with many opportunities for innovation. We are without a doubt the leader in the space, and my tenure continues because of our growth, innovation and of course the smart and dedicated people I get to work with daily.

4. What is FRT doing to ensure they are adapting to the changing landscape of the class action industry while continuing to meet the needs of current and future clients?

We are continuously enhancing our solutions to keep pace with the changing landscape. The market and overall perception of global shareholder litigation are shifting, so FRT is constantly evolving across all departments (i.e., product, operations, sales, marketing, etc.) to align with this new reality.

5. What advice do you have for someone considering a career at FRT in Product Marketing or Product Management?

Always continue to learn about different types of roles, functions, and organizational structures. In any job, you will interact with so many kinds of people and areas that it will go a long way in your personal and professional successes to have a baseline understanding of their perspective.

Employee Spotlight: Emily Fortin

Emily Fortin is the Associate Counsel and Legal Operations Team Manager at Financial Recovery Technologies and is primarily responsible for shareholder litigation research and monitoring for Opt-In and Antitrust cases. Prior to joining FRT, Emily provided in-house legal and legislative consulting for an unclaimed property audit firm in Massachusetts. She also has experience at a general litigation firm handling a variety of complex legal issues on behalf of a range of clients.

What are your top priorities and biggest challenges?

My top priority is to make FRT the best independent resource for all global shareholder recovery opportunities. That includes domestic actions, both class and individual opportunities for securities and antitrust actions, as well as opt-in actions anywhere that there’s been trading and security fraud, and to maintain the most comprehensive shareholder litigation database.

Gathering all of this information requires many different resources. We are proud to have built a rich network of relationships including corporations, government agencies, lawyers and other professionals. Through engagement with stakeholders around the globe, my team and I support investors with the research and industry expertise they require to make decisions regarding participation in litigation and other loss recovery opportunities. We also act as a voice for investors in the industry. Most recently, we spoke out on behalf of investor rights through our submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission.

How do you define success?

For me, personally, constantly growing and learning feels like success. I’ve had a few different iterations of my career. My early career was in the field of molecular biology research and then I ran a coffee shop. I loved going back to law school. It feels fantastic to be able to use that degree here at FRT where I get to learn new things about the ever-changing field of global securities litigation and help to educate clients.

What is FRT doing to ensure they are adapting to the changing landscape of the class action industry while continuing to meet the needs of current and future clients?

FRT’s goal is to reduce the noise for our clients.  To that end, we worked to develop a process to automate the workflow for most non-U.S. class actions, including Australian actions and Dutch foundations. Automating those recovery processes gives our clients an option to “set it and forget it” so that they can focus their valuable energy and attention on learning about changes to the industry and the few, more complex issues that come up each year.

As the pioneer in Antitrust class action recovery, FRT has taken a strong interest in really learning about these cases in depth, connecting with the claims administrators, and helping clients navigate these unique and complex cases. For last year’s Forex case, we processed more than 40,000 claims for nearly 250 clients.

What is one piece of advice that has changed your professional career?

Don’t overstate what you know. Be confident in sharing your breadth of knowledge and area of expertise. Clients appreciate honesty in those matters, and they appreciate knowing that we’ll go out and find the answer specifically for their question and we’re willing to do the legwork.

Employee Spotlight: Iris Sanxhaku

Iris Sanxhaku is an Account Manager at Financial Recovery Technologies. She recently relocated to London joining our European team as we continue to expand our business internationally. She brings over five years of experience in client service, where she primarily supports some of our largest custody clients and our European client base.

What are your top priorities?

My top priority is making sure that our clients are happy with our services. It is important to me that I’m providing not just reactive service, but proactive guidance on how to navigate our services and of course the market. An account manager at FRT is like a quarterback in football. You must be a master of the game and become an expert in delivering value to your top accounts.

FRT is growing, and the shareholder class action industry is continually evolving. New cases are being litigated and settled every day, so it is an exciting time to be an account manager.

What does your typical workday look like?

My average day is spent proactively educating my clients on cases where they have eligibility, responding to client inquiries, as well as internal and client meetings.

As I recently relocated to London, I now have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with our European clients and learn about the unique challenges they face that differ from the U.S. clients.

What is FRT doing to ensure they are adapting to the changing landscape of the class action industry while continuing to meet the needs of current and future clients?

Our Product Team has developed key processes to minimize the manual work and generate significantly better reporting. We are committed to automation and technology to provide efficiency.

Our Marketing Team has been phenomenal in updating the website and all our blogs providing content for us to share with clients and prospects. Especially through LinkedIn as an avenue of social media, which has come a long way over the years and we didn’t use as frequently when I first started.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during your tenure at FRT?

Attention to detail. Working with one of our largest partners, I have learned how important it is to make sure all data is accurate to ensure reporting is correct. I always double check what I am going to tell the client to make sure I am communicating with confidence.

What is one piece of advice that has changed your professional career?

Be open-minded. You never know when something isn’t for you unless you try it out and you never know what opportunities lie that could help you succeed in the future.
